KING CITY — With a 34-12 loss to Pacific Grove last Friday night, the King City Mustangs football team must improve their play with critical Mission Division games coming up against Carmel and Greenfield.

King City head coach Mac Villanueva needs his team to bounce back and play better this week and beyond.

“It felt like we were still recovering from the emotional hangover from last week’s game (against Gonzales),” Villanueva said. “We had execution problems on offense and defense. Two turnovers in the first half led to one of their two touchdowns in the first half. We also came away with zero points on two trips to the red zone in the first half. We really need to bounce back and have a good week because we have Carmel coming to town on Friday.”

The host Breakers have a good run game and can throw the football and proved that with two first half scores to take a 12-0 lead. Pacific Grove did have problems with the kicking game as they used three kickers in the game, missing two extra points in the first half.

The Mustangs looked ready to make a game of it as they drove the ball toward the Breaker red zone to start the third quarter on runs by Carson Tidwell. A King City fumble ended the drive and gave the ball and the momentum back to Pacific Grove.

The Breakers used a one-yard run by Brody Edmonds and two-point conversion to take a 20-0 lead, then completed their third quarter scoring with a two-yard touchdown and a PAT by James Lowen to pad the lead to 27-0.

King City ended the third quarter with a one-yard touchdown but the PAT was no good, making the score 27-6.

In the fourth, the Breakers scored on a running touchdown and PAT and the Mustangs finished their scoring with an eight-yard touchdown run by Tidwell. King City was unable to convert on a two-point conversion and the final score was 34-12.

Tidwell had a solid game with 133 yards and two touchdowns and finished with three receptions for 47 yards. Benjamin Bolanos led the defense with seven total tackles and a fumble recovery, and Fabian Herrera was a standout in the secondary.

King City (0-1 league, 2-3 overall) will next play Carmel (1-0 league, 5-0 overall) at home this Friday night.
