KING CITY — An outstanding week on the flag football field earned King City High player Katia Slama the MaxPreps/USA Football Girls High School Flag Football Player of the Week.
As the team’s quarterback, Slama helped the Lady Mustangs win four games from Oct. 7-13. The team wins were against the Alisal Trojans, Rancho San Juan Trailblazers, Soledad Aztecs and Aptos Mariners.
Slama, a sophomore, threw for 885 yards and had a completion rate of 81 of 109 in pass attempts with 15 touchdowns. As a running quarterback, Slama earned 194 rushing yards on 21 carries and scored three touchdowns.
“I heard about being chosen at practice the day before it came out and it was pretty exciting,” Slama said. “We have a better and bigger team this year, as only 13 girls finished the season last year, and this year we have 24 players.”
Slama, the 15-year-old daughter of Brent and Kirsten Slama, also plays basketball and softball at King City High and her favorite classes are Sports Med, P.E. and English.
The Lady Mustangs lost 32-30 to the Salinas Cowboys last Monday but rebounded with a 36-30 win against the Monterey Toreadores.
King City head coach Brent Slama is hoping his team can continue to do well the rest of the season.
“We want the girls to finish strong just like we started when we were 9-1,” said Coach Slama. “They proved their resilience against Monterey coming all the way back from 22-6 down to beat them. Against Salinas, we came back to within two points after going down 13-0. We will likely finish third in the Gabilan Division, which in the big picture will probably go down as one of the best team sports seasons ever for King City High in the PCAL era. My biggest sadness is that our team and seniors won’t have CCS playoffs to go to because I think we would have been a certain qualifier and a top contender in our enrollment division. We’ve been told it (playoffs) will happen in 2025.”
King City (8-4 league, 16-6 overall record) hosted Everett Alvarez on Monday, and will next play at Hollister on Wednesday and finish the season at Rancho San Juan on Friday.
