KING CITY — A tall Scotts Valley Falcons basketball wore down the King City Mustang basketball team in the second half to win the first round Central Coast Section Division IV contest at Scotts Valley, 79-59. The Falcons were the 10th seed in the Division IV while the Mustangs were unseeded.

“With four starters standing above 6-4, we knew we were going to have to battle really hard inside the paint,” said King City head coach Jesus Ramirez. “Our shooting early in the game kept us close with Scotts Valley and we trailed 14-18 at the end of the first quarter. Angel Trujillo started on fire and scored 10 of our 14 points. We continued attacking in the second quarter and found ourselves trailing by five at halftime (34-29). It wasn’t until the end of the third quarter that Scotts Valley opened a double-digit lead as we starting getting desperate and rushing shots allowing them to open a 12 point lead at the end of three quarters. In the fourth quarter we started pressing to try to get back into the game but Scotts Valley took advantage of our defensive mistakes and outscored us 24-16 for a final score of 79-59.”

Andy Barrios led the Mustangs in scoring with 16 points, Angel Trujillo added 15 points, and Cedric Perez joined his teammates in double figures with 13 points.

King City completed the season with an 11-13 overall record and finished 6-7 in the Mission Trail Athletic League. Scotts Valley was beaten 53-47 in the quarterfinals by the King’s Academy.
