KING CITY — For the first time since 1969 the King City High Pony basketball team won the Mission Trail Athletic League frosh boys championship. The Ponies completed the season with 57-38 win at home on Friday against Robert Louis Stevenson.

“Levi Hood scored 14 of his 18 points in the first quarter and nine of the 10 players scored,” said King City coach Ken Kline. “We tied Carmel for first in the league with a 7-1 record and we were 21-3 overall and won two tournament championships.”

In the Stevenson game Rafa Valdez scored six points with one 3-point basket and Mario Torres scored six points with two 3-point baskets. Joe White scored six points, Adam Cortez scored five points with one 3-point basket and Trey Salcido scored five points. Devin Morales and Brian Hernandez scored four points apiece and Jonah Mendez scored three points.

Hood was the top scorer for the Pony team finishing with 352 points, Salcido was the second leading scorer with 243 points, and Morales was third in scoring with 169 points. Morales was the leading 3-point basket scorer, finishing with 15, Hood was second with 12, and Cortez was third with 11.

Valdez led in free-throw percentage, finishing 37 of 59 for 63 percent. Salcido was second, shooting 51 of 85 for 60 percent and Hood was 50-84 to finish at 60 percent.

“We shot 53 percent for the season as a team,” said Coach Kline. “Six to 10 players shot above 50 percent, which is excellent for freshman.”

Coaches for the Ponies were Ken Kline and Chip Kosty.
