KING CITY — The size and speed of the Oakwood Hawks was too much for the host King City boys basketball team to overcome, as they lost 74-53 on Feb. 6 to the Morgan Hill based team.
“The first quarter was a close one at 14 apiece as we were able to contend the attack of their two post players who stand 6’7 and 6’5,” said King City head coach Jesus Ramirez. “In the second quarter the quickness of their guards was just too much and we got outscored 29-11, with 22 points scored by their guards. The score at halftime was 43-25. We played better in the second half was Cedi’s (Cedrick Perez), and Andy’s (Andy Barrios), gave came alive and they scored 25 of the 29 points we scored in the second half.” Barrios finished the game with 18 points and Perez finished with 17 points.
King City beat Oakwood 76-36 and were led in scoring by Caleb Hood with a game-high 22 points.
Two nights later the Mustangs traveled to the Monterey Peninsula and handed the host Trinity Christian Warriors a 75-59 loss. The win improved King City’s MTAL record to 5-7 and their overall record to 10-12.
“At first it was a close game,” said Coach Ramirez. “We put pressure in the second quarter and made Trinity turn the ball over and took a 15-point halftime lead at 43-28. We continued with our pressure defense and opened a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter. Trinity made a little run but fell short and we finished the game with the 75-59 victory.”
Barrios led King City with 21 points and Perez added 15 points. Andres Arellano and Hirem Parmar contributed with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The King City Broncos won the JV game, 67-33. Estevan Garcia led the Broncos with 13 points and Caleb Hood added 13 points of his own.
As Oakwood and Trinity Christian did not field frosh teams, the King City Ponies played one game last week against the Watsonville High Wildcatz. The Ponies won the game by a 65-50 score.
“A real shoot out,” said King City coach Ken Kline. “Both teams combined for 43 points in the third quarter. Joe White had his best game of the season with 18 points.”
King City concludes the regular season with home games this week against Greenfield (tonight) and on Friday against the Robert Louis Stevenson Pirates. The Mustangs can enter the Central Coast Section Plays as they finished the non-league schedule with a .500 record.
