KING CITY — A heatwave in Monterey County made for some hot time outside and intense battles in volleyball action for the King City Lady Mustangs.
On Oct. 1, King City hosted the Salinas High Cowboys in the Mustang gym while the temperature was blazing at 104 degrees in South Monterey County. The Mustangs came up short against the Cowboys, 3-1.
“Last Tuesday we had our Pink Night in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said King City head coach Christine Domingos. “It was hot but the girls were ready to play. We came out tough in the first set but ended up falling, 3-1. Overall, we put up a good fight.”
Amity Hearn had eight kills and 10 digs, Iran Ibarra and Hollyn Hearne combined for 11 kills, 11 digs and seven aces. Xienna Novoa added 15 digs and Janesa Lopez and Stephanie Velasquez had a combined 24 assists.
In a road game Oct. 3, the Lady Mustangs defeated the host Santa Catalina Cougars by a 3-1 score in Monterey.
“We were looking forward to the match and some cooler temps, which we got,” Domingos said. “The Lady Mustangs came out on fire, winning the first set 25-7. Hayden Munoz and Hollyn Hearne had great offensive matches and Amity Hearne was great from the serving line. This week we had a home match with Carmel on Monday and tonight (Wednesday) is our Youth Night at home against Monte Vista Christian.”
Hollyn Hearne had 18 kills, nine digs and two blocks. Iran Ibarra added six kills, 13 digs and five aces, and Hayden Munoz had 11 kills. Xienna Novoa and Jocelyn Romero combined for 28 digs, and Janesa Lopez and Stephanie Velasquez combined for 33 assists and 19 digs.
The Lady Mustangs are 14-5 overall and 4-2 in the Gabilan Division, which places them in third place in the standings.
