WHITE CANE DAY
KING CITY — King City Lions Club will host its annual White Cane Day on Friday, Oct. 4, with tables set up at Kasey’s Fitness, Safeway and Ace Hardware in King City for monetary donations. The majority of funds collected will benefit local children by providing eye exams and eyeglasses. The club provides $4,000 to $8,000 each year for this service. In addition, used glasses may be dropped off at Friday’s donation locations, as well as year round at the King City Library, 402 Broadway St. The glasses are refurbished for those in need. “Remember, the proceeds benefit needy children in our community,” said King City Lions Club Chairman David Daines.
BLOOD DONORS
MONTEREY COUNTY — American Red Cross continues to amplify the ongoing critical need for blood to keep the blood supply stable as fall begins. Donors of all blood types, especially those with type O blood, those giving platelets and those who have never given before, are needed now. Only 3 out of 100 Americans donate blood. With the blood supply still at critical levels, every single donation is key to making sure all patients relying on lifesaving transfusions, including car accident victims and those living with sickle cell disease, get the care they need. Make an appointment to give now by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App. Those who come to give Oct. 1-31 will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card by email, plus be automatically entered for a chance to win one of three $5,000 gift cards. Upcoming blood donation opportunities include: Saturday, Oct. 5, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Salinas Police Department, 312 E. Alisal St., in Salinas.
FAMILY FARM DAY
SALINAS — The Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association (ALBA) will host a Family Farm Day on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On this day, the community is invited to visit its 100-acre training facility, nestled in the heart of the Salinas Valley. With impressive views of the local farmland and mountain ranges, guests will be able to purchase a bounty of freshly harvested organic produce from family farms while also learning about sustainable agricultural practices and the unique nonprofit organization. Families will enjoy activities like tractor rides, a “corn” maze, face painting, carnival games, pumpkin decoration and a giant bouncy obstacle course. Lunch and treats will be available to purchase. Visitors are encouraged to bring cash and re-usable bags for produce purchases. ALBA is located at 1700 Old Stage Road, south of Salinas. Once at the property entrance, follow the ALBA signs into the farm. For more information, call 831-758-1469 or visit albafarmers.org.
