KING CITY — Whitney (Hudson) Meyer, a 2006 graduate of King City High School, will be the lone entry into the 2023 King City High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Meyer will be inducted Thursday, Aug. 31, during halftime of the King City Mustangs home football game against Palma. She will join her mother Debbie Hudson and grandfather Bill Pitcher in the local Hall of Fame.
“I appreciate being recognized for my athletic contributions to our programs,” Meyer said. “I loved wearing a King City uniform, and it is an honor to join the Hall of Fame.”
Meyer was a two-sport athlete as a Lady Mustang, playing four years on the volleyball team and three seasons as a soccer goalie.
As a volleyball player, Meyer was a three-time All-Mission Trail Athletic League selection and received honorable mention as a freshman. She was also named All-County for three straight years by the Monterey Herald and the Salinas Californian.
As a setter and outside hitter, Meyer helped the Lady Mustangs earn four Central Coast Section playoff berths and led the team to a 16-0 MTAL record and 24-5 overall record for the league champions.
On the soccer pitch, Meyer was a three-time All-MTAL player as a goalie and had a standout season in 2005 as she finished the year with eight shutouts.
Meyer was the Lady Mustangs Best Defensive Player in 2005 and finished her career as an athlete at King City High by being chosen as the Female Athlete of the Year.
After graduating from King City, Meyer attended UCLA and earned a degree in economics. While attending UCLA, she played on the school’s Club Volleyball team as setter/outside hitter and went to Nationals three years.
Meyer completed internships in marketing for the UCLA Women’s Volleyball and Men’s Baseball teams, and had an internship in Colorado Springs for the USA Olympic Committee in marketing. She also earned a master’s degree in kinesiology from Fresno Pacific.
Meyer served as assistant coach for the Cuesta College women’s volleyball team in the 2015 and 2016 seasons and took over the Cougars program as head coach in 2017.
In 2021, under the guidance of Meyer, the Cougars made their first playoff appearance in 17 years.
As a player at Cuesta College, Meyer was an All-Conference player in the 2013 and 2014 seasons and was a nominee for the Cuesta Athlete of the Year. She also was a California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Scholar Athlete for two years.
Meyer is on the Cuesta record board for career service aces (#1); season service aces (#2); career service aces (#7); and career kills (#12). She served as team captain her two years at Cuesta.
Meyer said she enjoyed her time as a student-athlete at King City High and had a few memories to share.
“The memories I have at KCHS athletics all center around support,” she said. “Teammates supporting each other with dress up days, hustle and heart. Playing in front of packed home stands and singing the Fight Song win or lose. All Hail to KC High! Fans traveling by bus to volleyball playoff matches and my parents freezing on the bleachers in the rain to watch me play soccer.”
