KING CITY — More than 50 volunteers attended King City in Bloom’s Earth Day Town-Wide Cleanup last Saturday morning, during which they were asked to give 90 minutes of their time to keep the town clean.

Among the attendees were volunteers from Sun Street Centers, 4-H Blue Ribbon, 4-H Rural, city staff and individual community members. Together they filled four yard trash receptacles.

They first met at city hall but went throughout the town in their cleaning endeavor.

“Part of King City in Bloom’s mission is tidiness,” said Allie Cullen, chairperson of King City in Bloom. “Since the group’s inception, we have been sponsoring at least three town-wide cleanups a year.”

The April 24 cleanup was a reminder for the volunteers to never litter, and many of them continued to pick up trash outside the event timeframe. Cullen said the cleanups have a habit of being contagious once started.

“I’m always so impressed at the turn out for cleanups,” Cullen said. “Community members giving their Saturday morning for service always makes my heart full.”

The next landscape project for KCIB is the library planters. The group will collaborate with Friends of the Library and the City of King to create a welcoming landscape for the library patrons to enjoy.

Also in the works is the final phase of the mural, “A Tribute to Cattle Ranching and the Salinas Valley Fair,” which will take place in late June.

The group’s next cleanup will be June 26 during King City’s Beautification Week.
