SALINAS VALLEY — Volleyball teams from South Monterey County have played their final non-league games and are now in the middle of league play.

In their final tune-up before league play, King City took on Carmel last Tuesday but came up short, as the Padres won 3-1. Last Thursday was the start of league play for the Mustangs, who ultimately lost to Santa Catalina in a sweep.

Soledad went 1-1 last week. First, the Aztecs beat Greenfield in a tough match, 3-2. Then, to start the league play, Soledad lost to Monte Vista Christian in a match they initially led by 2-0. The MVC Mustangs ended up winning, 3-2.

Greenfield had three games scheduled last week. They started the week off by losing to Soledad in five sets, then the next day they got swept by Gonzales. On Thursday, the start of league play, they swept York to start 1-0 in the league.

Arguably the best performing team this week was the Gonzales Spartans, who also played three games. The first win was against Marina, 3-1, and they ended their preseason against Greenfield by beating them in a sweep.

To start league play, Gonzales continued to dominate, beating Rancho San Juan in a sweep, 3-0.
