MONTHLY LUNCHEON

KING CITY — Southern Monterey County Republican Women Federated will host its monthly luncheon meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 11:30 a.m. at King Kora Restaurant, 611 Canal St., in King City. The guest speaker will be Joe Desmond, executive director of Sustainable Agriculture and Energy. The club’s 2021 scholarship recipients will be honored, as well. Everyone is welcome. BACKPACK GIVEAWAY

SALINAS — Goodwill Central Coast, with 11 locations in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, will give away 200 new backpacks, 100 for each county, filled with school supplies, including pencils, erasers, rulers, notebooks a shirt and more, to celebrate in-person learning this year. DEVELOPMENT SERVICES

MONTEREY COUNTY — Monterey County’s Housing and Community Development (HCD) Department has reopened for in-person service. The department, which provides development and land use services, such as those for housing, planning, building, engineering and environmental, had been serving residents remotely since March 2020, when pandemic emergency health orders went into effect. During that time, data shows that there were 3,988 online building applications, 12,981 calls received for permit technicians and 66,139 inquiries to the HCD call center. HCD has resumed its normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 1441 Schilling Place, 2nd Floor, in Salinas.
