KING CITY — King City Police Department is warning the community about a telephone scam that falsely uses its main office number.

On April 13, a victim received a phone call from an unknown female who identified herself as a detective with the King City Police Department. The caller ID indicated the call came from the department’s main office number, 831-385-4848.

The suspect told the victim that she was investigating a case involving identity theft and instructed the victim to withdrawal all the money from her bank account “so her identity could be cleared,” police said. Then, the suspect told the victim to take her money to the local Bitcoin depot and deposit it into an account.

The woman did as instructed, only to learn later that she had fallen victim to a scam.

“King City Police Department would like to remind the community to be careful when receiving phone calls from any person or institution asking for personal information and/or money,” police said.

KCPD will never ask community members to withdrawal or deposit money in any account, nor would the department ask a community member to pay for police services.

Anyone who receives a call from somebody identifying themselves as an employee of the King City Police Department, and feels the call may not be legitimate, call KCPD directly at 831-385-4848 or the Monterey County Communications Center at 831-385-8311 to report it.
