KING CITY — Community Food Pantry of King City will once again be open beginning Friday, April 29, after being closed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Over the past two years, the Food Pantry Board did not feel it was safe for volunteers and families to distribute food. Now, as the pandemic eases, the local pantry will be open every Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. until November.

“We now feel it is safe, and we are excited to begin sharing food with those in need in our South County communities,” said Anita McKean, speaking on behalf of the Board.

Community Food Pantry is located at 126 Bassett St. in King City.

In addition, the Food Pantry Board wanted to acknowledge and give thanks to all the generous donors who contributed funds to obtain the food.

Another source of income was the recent Goodwill collection drive. The pantry received $2,000 from Goodwill for filling two truckloads of used items donated from the community.

“Thank you to all who donated items, and a special thank you to the volunteers that helped during the collection,” McKean said.

The Board also recognized the many volunteers who help run the Community Food Pantry.

On Thursdays, volunteers drive a truck to the Food Bank for Monterey County in Salinas to pick up most of the food, while others collect donated food from Safeway. Once the truck arrives back in King City, volunteers unload the food and stock the shelves.

Then, on Friday morning, volunteers arrive early to prepare the donation area and get ready to distribute the food. After the food is distributed and the doors are closed, they clean up the facility and prepare for the following week.

“The volunteers are truly the heart of the operation, and we could not exist without them,” McKean said.

Anyone interested in volunteering with the pantry can call McKean at 831-809-1637.
