SALINAS VALLEY — With one week left before finding out who will make it to the postseason, South Monterey County has at least one team going, but Soledad and King City will be in the conversation.

In the Central Coast Section, there are six divisions. Out of those divisions, 41 teams will be automatic qualifiers and seven at-large teams will get in based on their resumes.

Greenfield Bruins

For now, the Greenfield Bruins are the only team from South County that’s guaranteed a spot in the postseason because they won the Cypress Division.

Right when the Bruins started league play, they have been dominating the league. They are also trying to have a perfect league record.

Prediction: IN. The Bruins will likely have a home game in their first postseason game.

Gonzales Spartans

The Cypress Division will only get one automatic qualifier. The Gonzales Spartans baseball program, which can’t finish higher than second place, will have a hard time getting in.

In their non-league schedule, the Spartans are only 1-2.

Prediction: OUT. The Spartans don’t have enough non-league wins to get in.

King City Mustangs

Riding a three-game losing streak, the King City Mustangs have put themselves in a deep hole. The Mustangs dropped two games to Watsonville and one to Stevenson.

One problem that the Mustangs will face when trying to make a case they belong in the postseason is they only have two non-league wins.

Prediction: OUT. They just don’t have enough big wins to make a case for an at-large bid.

Soledad Aztecs

When the Soledad Aztecs baseball team went on their six-game winning streak, many people thought they would be a lock to earn an automatic qualifiers spot in the Gabilan Division.

Unfortunately for the Aztecs, in their last nine games they are 3-6. That has put the Aztecs in a three-way tie for the last automatic qualifiers spot in the division. The teams they are tied with are Salinas High and Monterey, both of whom they lost to during the season.

The good news for the Aztecs, since they play in one of the hardest schedules in the league, is they still have a chance to get in as an at-large team.

Prediction: IN. If Soledad can go 1-1 in these last two games, they should be able to get an at-large bid.
