MODESTO — Alvaro Pantoja of the San Ardo Boxing Club won by unanimous decision at the Red Shield Boxing Show in Modesto on Saturday afternoon. Pantoja fought in the 135 pound weight class.

“When we arrived at Modesto we were told that there was not an opponent available for Alvaro Pantoja at 135 pounds,” said San Ardo Boxing Coach Rodolfo Tapia. “We took Kevin Perez to fight at 132 pounds but he had not updated his physical and was not allowed to fight. Since he could not fight his opponent went up to fight Alvaro. It was a good fight and went toe-to-toe but Alvaro was the better boxer and he proved it in the ring.”

Ivan Vasquez fought at Modesto in the 118 pound weight class and lost by split decision. The 21-year-old Vasquez was fighting in his last amateur fight.

“Ivan has fought in over 45 fights in the amateur division,” said Coach Tapia. “He fought really well and got in a lot of good body shots on his opponent. He has a lot of experience now and is ready to move up to the professional division.”

The next fight for San Ardo and King City Boxing Club members will be in Tulare. 25-year-old Garrett Mitchell (two wins, one loss), will fight in the 165 pound weight class and 10-year-old Daniel Verduzco will fight in the 90 pound weight class.

On June 10, the San Ardo and King City Boxing Clubs will be hosting a boxing show at the Kennedy Fitness Club in Paso Robles. Many local and clubs from throughout California have been invited to the event.

In late August or early September the King City Boxing Club will be hosting a boxing show at a site to be determined in King City.

According to Coach Tapia the King City Boxing Club has been staying very busy at their gym on Division Street.

“We have been super busy at the King City gym,” said Tapia. “It is nice to have so many kids attending. We have about 40 kids that come to train and about five adults. I focus mainly in teaching and coaching the kids.”

The hours for the King City Boxing Club are from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
