Lady Mustangs score wins in league


KING CITY — The King City Lady Mustangs won on the road and at home to start the Mission Trail Athletic League with a 2-0 record and improved to 9-0 overall. King City opened league play on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Pacific Grove and beat the host Breakers in four games, 20-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-12.

Grace Shepherd was a beast at the net as she smashed 27 kills against the Breakers. Megan Flores added seven kills and led the team with 22 assists. Cassidy Flores contributed with 16 assists Julyssa Arreola had 16 digs and Nancy Andrade finished with 15 digs.

At home last Thursday in Pebble Beach the Lady Mustangs defeated the host Stevenson Pirates, 25-10, 25-19, 25-13. Shepherd led King City with 11 kills and Delaney Carroll added five kills and made four blocks. Shepherd and Andrade had eight digs apiece against the Pirates. Megan Flores led King City with 13 assists and Cassidy Flores just missed double figures with nine. Shepherd finished with eight service aces and King City finished with 16 total service aces. Kathy Acero and Jalen Mendez contributed at the service line.

Yesterday the Lady Mustangs continued Mission Trail Athletic League play in Monterey against Santa Catalina and will host Gonzales High tomorrow in the King City gym.

“Catalina is the top team not only in our league but in CCS too (Central Coast Section),” said Coach Debbie Hudson. “They (Cougars), have four All-League players back and they are undefeated this year. Gonzales always plays tough and will be aggressive.”
