SOUTH COUNTY — Delaney Carroll and Alyssa Richardson scored in double figures to lead the King City Lady Mustang basketball to a 46-34 win over Gonzales High in the varsity game of the King City Christmas Classic. Carroll scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds and Richardson filled her stat sheet with 10 points, two 3-point baskets, six rebounds, and three steals.

Megan Flores led King City on the boards with 11 rebounds and scored three points. Mikayla Davis scored seven points and Nancy Andrade scored seven points and had six assists. Ivy Hearne and Lucy Cabrera scored four points apiece. Karla Roque led Gonzales with 14 points, including four 3-point baskets and Denise Robles added 10 points.

Gonzales will open league on Friday, Jan. 11, against Greenfield.

As Gonzales and King City were the only varsity teams entered in the tournament and the game was played last Wednesday night.

The junior varsity portion of the tournament featured four teams, as St. Francis, North Monterey County, Soledad and King City competed. St. Francis placed first and beat North County in the championship game.

King City (3-6) lost to St. Francis and defeated Soledad last Thursday afternoon. Sarah Brewen was chosen to the JV all-tourney team.

“We are starting to come together as a team,” said Lady Mustang head coach Frank Padilla. “Megan Flores is recovering from being a little sick and will play better as the season goes along. She is a two-time All-League player and we expect a lot from her. Delaney Carroll has been close to a double-double every game and leads us in scoring with 10 points a game. Nancy Andrade is playing consistently at guard and Alyssa Richardson is our leader as a 3-point shooter. We start the Mission Trail Athletic League on Friday at Carmel and that will be a motivator playing against a good team.”
