KING CITY — The King City Mustang baseball team went 2-1 last week to improve to 11-5-1 and 6-3-1 in the Mission Trail Athletic League. King City split contests with Stevenson in MTAL play, beating the Pirates 10-4 at Pebble Beach and losing 2-1 to the Pirates in the second game. The Mustangs ended the week with a 4-3 victory on Friday against the visiting Alisal High Trojans.

“We lost in the bottom of the seventh against Stevenson, and we beat Alisal at home in the bottom of the seventh,” said King City head coach Lorenzo Espino. “In our first game with Stevenson last Monday Clay Barbree went six innings for the win and helped himself with two hits and two RBI’s. John Serrano came in to close out the game in the final inning and Barbee and Cedrick Perez added two hits apiece. Serrano contributed by scoring two runs.”

In the loss to Stevenson, the Pirates hit a bloop basehit to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Jeovani Santoyo had a basehit for the Mustangs.

“We took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and then Stevenson scored the tying run off and error,” said Espino. “They had a runner on base and if we had made a play we could have finished the inning with a 1-0 lead. We were able to play a good team in Alisal that was leading their league in a non-league home game. We pitched John Bautista and I was expecting him to go a few innings but he ended up going a strong five innings before I put in Serrano to wrap things up. Bautista is a sophomore and did an excellent job.”

In the Alisal game Tommy Stephens made his debut after an injury that had him out since the baseball season. Serrano reached base on a hit and got to second on a stolen base. Stephens then was asked to bunt him over to third and came through with the timely bunt. Serrano would then score on a basehit by Jose Arreola.

The Mustangs played at home yesterday against the Marina Mariners, play tomorrow at Aptos, and travel to Marina on Friday to play the host Mariners.
