King City boys drop 2 in Salinas


KING CITY — The King City Mustang basketball ended the non-league schedule with a .500 record after dropping two of three games at last week’s North Salinas Bob Steinbach Classic in Salinas.

The Mustangs were edged 62-60 in the opener by the Pajaro Valley Grizzlies, defeated league rival Greenfield 64-40 in the second game, and lost 65-43 to the Everett Alvarez Eagles in the final game.

In the Pajaro Valley contest Cedrick Perez led King City in scoring with 16 points and was had two 3-point baskets. Angel Trujillo had a strong showing with 15 points with five 3-point baskets, and Andy Barrios scored 10 points.

In the win over the Greenfield Bruins the Mustangs raced to a 17-6 first quarter lead and took a 37-19 lead at the half. Barrios led King City with 21 points, Perez scored 12 points, and Andres Arrellano scored 15 points with three 3-point baskets. Oscar Villagomez led Greenfield with 13 points.

In their final game of the tournament against Everett Alvarez Barrios was the only Mustang in double figures in scoring, finishing with a team-high 21 points. Trujillo scored seven points, with one 3-point basket, and Arrellano contributed with six points. King City (5-5) opens the Mission Trail Athletic League on Friday at home against the Carmel High Padres.
