Football | Cougars shut out Mustangs

KING CITY — Christopher High School running back Tyler Davis ran for 226 yards and four touchdowns in the Cougars 28-0 non-league win against the King City Mustangs on Friday at War Memorial Stadium. Davis tallied three scores in the first period as the Cougars raced to a 21-0 lead.

Davis started the game with a 10-yard touchdown run, followed by a 15-yard score just four minutes later. With just over three minutes to play in the opening quarter Davis gave the visitors a commanding 21-0 advantage with 38-yard touchdown run.

“Turnovers and penalties got us again,” said King City head coach Mac Villanueva. “We can’t afford that against quality opponents. We threw an interception at the five-yard line in the first half an interception in the end zone in the second half. We had opportunities to make the game closer but failed to do so.”

The Cougars racked up 451 yards of offense with 282 rushing yards and 169 passing yards. Christopher quarterback Jason Scirigione passed for 159 yards with 17 completions in 22 attempts and was credited with one interception. The Mustangs amassed 250 yards with 165 yards rushing yards and 85 passing yards. Alex Valdez led the King City rushing attack with 90 yards on 12 carries and quarterback Dylan Oliveros ran for 50 yards on 18 carries. Oliveros was six of 16 passing for 52 yards and threw two interceptions. Jonathan Toledo and Luis Briseno had two receptions apiece, and each receiver had 33 yards.

“Dylan (Oliveros), has faced some really tough defenses in the past two weeks,” Villanueva said. “He’s struggled with protecting the ball. He’s had some explosive plays and he’s a threat to break a big play any time. This week we start league when we host Santa Cruz and they are nothing like our last two opponents but that was by design. They (Cardinals) have some size up front and a few decent athletes.”

In the junior varsity contest, the Christopher Cougars defeated the King City Broncos by a 33-3 score.

“Camilo Martinez score on a 45-yard field goal for our only points,” said Bronco head coach Evan Petrovic. “We are excited to get a fresh start with league.”
